BIGFOOT DAZE III TOURS
* Saturday, August 27th, the WBS met at the Bigfoot Campground north of Carson, WA, for our third annual meeting with camp host Harry Schumacher. The first item was a tour to the Ice Cave near Trout Lake, led by Bill Harper. The group stopped also at the Natural Bridges nearby. Members said it was an enjoyable outing, but were disappointed that the ice had mostly melted in the cave. The tour group returned in time to take a second trip, led by Ray Crowe, to the Government Mineral Springs, where all sipped the mineral water from the Iron Mike pump and took a walk in the old growth cedar and fir forest. As several wanted to see the petrified wood on Rock Creek, another short trip was made to the outskirts of Stevenson, WA, and collections were made.
DOC MICHAELS PERFORMS
* Music was by Doc Michaels, who entertained with guests on the saxophone, bongo drums, and harmonica, until 1:30 AM. His song, "Encounter On Onion Peak,"╙ told of a personal experience near Cannon Beach, OR. Camped on the east side of Onion Peak (no date), something big crashed up through the forest on two legs. There was a strong odor, and the dog started to whine and shake. Other dance music was blues or classic 70's type of rock and roll.
TOD DEERY OF THE BIGFOOT RESEARCH PROJECT IS KEYNOTE SPEAKER
* Tod Deery, Director Of Field Research at The Bigfoot Research Project (1-800-Bigfoot) delivered an excellent summary of activity at TBRP...thanks a lot Tod. Items included two Bigfoot sighting reports (still actively being researched, so data is sketchy), and a detailed summary of new and proposed hi-tech equipment being utilized in the quest. Tod, a civil engineer, was hired full-time by TBRP a year and a half ago, and takes pride in being one of the few people on a full-time paid basis directly involved in the search for the Bigfoot creature. Peter Byrne, originally scheduled to deliver the opening talk, was in Boston discussing the acquisition of some of the new hi-tech gear.
Recently in the South Central Cascades of Washington, a dog breeder and young mother of two children heard a noise outside of her bedroom before sunrise. It was 6:30-7 AM, and she looked up from her bed and saw what appeared to be a football player wearing a full fur coat walk past the window. The dogs were howling and making all kinds of commotion. She thought it must have been her visiting sister-in-law, but was surprised to find her drinking coffee in the kitchen. The two women and two children went out to investigate and found 18 inch footprints and an area where something big had gone into the brush. She knew it wasn't a bear or other form of local wildlife, which she was familiar with. This sighting has been given a high credibility rating by TBRP.
About the end of July, 1994, a report came in briefly from a lady wilderness ranger who has spent three years with the Forest Service. On her return from a three week stint in a popular Oregon wilderness area, she said that during the night she heard footprints near her tent, and growling sounds followed by a screaming roar, and the squealing sound of a pig. More on this later...the lady has returned to the wilderness again for another three weeks.
"WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE THE BEST GEAR AVAILABLE...THAT'S HOW THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED...INTENDED TO BE A FIVE YEAR FULL OUT EFFORT WITH BASICALLY NO HOLDS BARRED," SAYS TOD DEERY.
Some of Tod's references to new hi-tech equipment are a bit complex, but as we're poised on the brink of the 20th century, and on finding Bigfoot...I thought it important to record everything that seemed significant, and mostly in Tod's words, though without quote marks. As this is probably one of the more important talks given on Bigfoot recently, I'd like readers to give it due consideration. A copy of the tape of BF Daze III can be had for $10.00 + $2.00 postage and handling from Sasquatch Sleuth Larry Lund, 4019 NE 54th, Vancouver, WA 98661 (mention WBS).
Computers. A Geographical Information System. The TBRP is investigating the integration of its data base with the ESRI (Environmental Sciences Research Institute) software data base ARCVIEW II. Areas of interest with computer maps will include vegetation, hydrology, climatology and edible plant distribution considered to be utilized by Bigfoot, and will be compared with sighting information received from witness reports. Using standard math formulas, patterns of consistency will be sought that might indicate patterns of movement; like migrations to or from food plants.
One of the more important new instruments utilized by The Bigfoot Research Project that Tod displayed was the GPS, Global Positioning System. The small device fits in the palm of the hand and can yield elevation, latitude and longitude, often within a few up to a thousand meters. The US military use these to guide warheads, thus a perfect location is not given. Tod mentions that we wouldn't want an enemy government using our own technology to direct weapons at us. The device can automatically acquire and lock on to a maximum of 13 space satellite tracks in orbit although it only requires a lock on three to give accurate data.
"IT'S IMPORTANT TO KNOW THAT THE BIGFOOT RESEARCH PROJECT IS A BENIGN PROJECT. WE HAVE NO INTENTION OF HARMING ONE OF THESE CREATURES, CAPTURING IT IN ANY WAY, OR TRANQUILIZING IT...WE SIMPLY WISH TO CONFIRM ITS EXISTENCE," TOD DEERY SAYS.
The Bigfoot Research Project has an arrangement with Hillsboro Helicopters that allows them on a 24 hour basis, 365 days a year, to call in support with a helicopter mounted FLIR device, Foreword Looking Infra-Red. They can communicate at long distance, and the FLIR thermal imaging device can sense through moderately dense foliage at night, recording a real time image. Using the GPS device in the air and on the ground, ground based personnel can coordinate the helicopter and the target by triangulation, and possibly a ground based volunteer group can intercept one of these creatures.
Tod mentioned that the creature sought with a noisy helicopter might be confused and scared, he would just as soon resolve the existence question with a better scenario. That is, letting the Geotime Patterns work their magic on the computer. Then he could anticipate where it would be for a given time of year and at what food source it would be, and the possible motivation of the creature. Then they could just be sitting and waiting for the Bigfoot to arrive.
Another method being tested in an Infra-Red sensing camera system that is commercially available. Tod pointed out the five clocks in the unit and the Infra-Red laser. The beam is projected through a screen that increases the beam diameter to three feet at a distance of fifty feet. Any object that breaks the beam would activate a solenoid circuit that would press the shutter release. TBRP owns quite a few of these 36 exposure instruments and they have been working fairly well in tests with large moving objects...initially migrant workers traversing a path in the woods.
One piece of new technology, not yet released to the public, could be a network of sensors that are seismically activated (detect something heavy walking). The "motion detector" sensor is buried in the ground and the transmitter is camouflaged in a tree. Deployed in a grid structure or some other pattern, possibly at a choke point, the device upon activation of the seismic sensor, will send a signal to TBRP headquarters. The signal tells us that an object of a certain weight is in a certain target area. The sensor is buried in the ground, and the transmitter is camouflaged in a tree.
The second phase, upon receiving a signal, would utilize some of the newest feasible technology. Using an RPV, "Remotely piloted Vehicle," a small aircraft with a 5-10 foot wingspan, somewhat smaller than a private aircraft, would enter the area. Flown from the ground by remote control, they are used presently by the military for reconnaissance behind enemy lines. Besides GPS and transmitters, the 50-60# payload will include an Infra-red camera, similar to, but without the resolution of those presently in use on the helicopters. The drone aircraft can fly a pre-programmed pattern up to 15,000 feet, and be taken over manually when something interesting is found. (Note: Due to FAA regulations and liability concerns, TBRP will possibly abandon the RPV in favor of stationary imaging devices, but are keeping options open.)
In practice, a possible scenario of a Bigfoot Alert would be...the motion detector would signal TBRP Headquarters that something heavy has passed close by. Tod would then send up the drone to detect with the target and track it until Hillsboro Helicopter can arrive on scene, then the drone would be landed, possibly on a roadway. The ground crew, Tod hopes he can be included (wouldn't mind going myself), would then be summoned to the area after determining from the GPS system the exact location and direction of the creature. If contact is made, then the first fully documented meeting between man and near-man would take place...and what a historic event that would be!
SEVERAL OTHER SPEAKERS AT BIGFOOT DAZE III
Other speakers included Datus Perry with some comments on errors in Sasquatch descriptions; Author Nancy Logan, on her book, "Children Of A Lost Spirit;" Fred Bradshaw with some recent BF reports and his sightings near North River; and Steve Williams on his encounter and photographs of Bigfoot on the Molalla River in 1993. Steve has been interested in Bigfoot for the last 29 years. Fred's interest was stimulated when he saw the first Patterson pictures in 1967. Later he did some investigative work while a deputy sheriff with the Greys Harbor County Sheriff's Department, WA. Besides older Bigfoot reports in the Track Record, Fred has learned of some fresh activity.
August 20th, Fred Bradshaw reports, Quinault Indians were picking berries at Elephant Rock, a six mile hike from, Quinault Lake (T23N R9W), WA, when two creatures about six foot in height and dark colored put in an appearance. The Indians have quit picking in that area. Fred was told the tale by Tom A., a Drug and Alcohol Program advisor for the Quinault that asks for Bigfoot tales to pass along to the WBS.
Fred says his son and two other people were on the Johns River (T16N R10W) August 24th, and heard a loud roar, like a lion would make, and then something big came crashing through the brush. They think it was a Bigfoot creature. The Johns River is just south of Grays Harbor and east of Westport on the Washington Coast.
BIGFOOT FEMALE SEEN IN KLAMATH COUNTY
* On August 13th, Pat Garnier of the Sioux Nation, and Klamath Chief Buddy Parazou, were poaching elk 1 1/2 miles SW of Pelican Butte, OR (T35S R5E Sec. 30), about five miles west of the upper end of Klamath Lake. On top of a ridge in heavy forest, Pat reported seeing a "demon," or he says, a woman gorilla. He knows it was female, as the estimated 7 1/2 foot creature had bare breasts, and appeared to be lactating, with child (not seen). The skin was a light brown, but the rest of the creature was dark brown. They sighted-in on the creature with loaded rifles, watching through their scopes. Pat said that canine teeth were seen and the creature was about 50 yards away. A loud scream was heard. They had no intentions of shooting the creature, and rapidly left the area.
CANADIAN SIGHTING
* Bill Green called from Bristol, MS, on 8/22, to say he had a new sighting report, but the witness didn't want to reveal his name or the exact location. Bill said the report was from Ontario, Canada, two weeks ago (8/14?). The witness had been camping, when about mid-day, he saw the seven foot Sasquatch watching him from the woods. It eventually ambled off, leaving a confused camper. The creature left 18 inch tracks.
BIGFOOT SEEN OFTEN
* Steve Williams talked to a witness who told of a Bigfoot sighting on August 7th. One mile west of the town of Valsetz, OR (T8S R8W, area now closed due to fire danger) on the South Fork of the Siletz River. The witness was panning for gold and said he smelled something, and saw BF staring at him from over the rim of his glasses. He started talking to it softly, and it walked away. The man-gorilla was about 8 foot tall, and the witness headed for his car. On the drive out, he saw another one standing in the trees. For those of you wearing skepticals, the man is very lucky, as he says he's seen 40 or 50 of the creatures.
OLD FOOT NOTES
MOUNT HOOD CREATURE CROSSES HIGHWAY
* Rick Shaffer and friend, Dan F., were going fishing in 1978. They had crossed Mount Hood, and were descending on Hy. 26, when about 3:00 AM they saw a big, black, creature cross the highway going to the southwest. This was about two miles south of the Hy. 26-35 Junction (T4S R9E Sec. 6), OR.
PROMISING SOUTHERN OREGON SITE
* Mike Rinnan of Central Point, OR, called 8/17, to report several Bigfoot related incidents from the vicinity of Oregon highway junctions 34 and 37, about 15 miles NE of Butte Falls (T34S R4E). Nothing has been seen recently though, although they went to Ron Olson's old Bigfoot trap near Medford on 8/16 just to look around. The trap is aging, but still they could see scratch marks from a bear...Ron said the trap worked well, just no Bigfoot. His best catch was an Indian.
Riding mountain bikes, 2 years ago at Black Bear Swamp (sec. 2) twisted trees were found. Nearby on the upper South Fork of the Rogue River three years ago twisted trees were also found, and 4 years ago at Rustler peak (6205 ft, sec. 10) twisted trees were found. 4 1/2-5 years ago at Black Bear Swamp, a 8-10 inch rock was thrown at a girlfriend, hitting the trunk of a big pine tree 10 foot off the ground and knocking off a large chunk of bark. She accused him of throwing it until they noticed a large deer or something moving through the brush. Four years ago at the start of Archery hunting (elk) season in August, friend Richard Robinson and buddy Monty were at Black Bear Swamp and saw one of the creatures on a hill by the road about 7 PM. Said to be shadowy, brownish, maybe 12 feet, Richard said when I talked to him on the phone 8/18. A week later near the same place on Lodgepole Road #34 junction with #37, at 12 midnight in the light of the moon, Richard and friend Dell caught a glimpse of a creature as it crossed the long, straight stretch of road. There was not enough light for details, but it was a big one, and as it went through the foot thick trees, set them to waving. Their attention was originally on a 4-point deer as it crossed the road to the left, then the creature crossed going to the right.
The most recent thing was when they were riding their mountain bikes north of Rustler Peak, and they ran into an area of incredibly bad odor, not of something dead. Away from the area, tracks were found near Anderson Butte (5195 ft., T39S R1W Sec. 2), about 6 miles SW of Talent. Near Union Creek (T31S R4E), along Gingko Creek, Hy. 60, a friend found tracks ten years ago, and another friend found three sets of tracks there 15 years ago. They were going to the water, and the large set was about 20 inches, the medium 15 inches, and a small set was only about 5 inches.
ANOTHER EARTH MOUND REPORT
* Chuck recalls 20 years ago being on the lower Roaring River, SE of Estacada Oregon. He was prospecting for cinnabar, the ore of mercury. He found a mound of earth, somewhat overgrown, at river level, that was about three feet high, and about five feet long, though irregular. There were some big rocks on it, that probably weighed up to 60#. Weeds and such were on the mound, and he dug in it for a short distance, but didn't find anything. At waters edge he said it would probably have washed away by now. A news article about two years later concerning Bigfoot is what reminded Chuck of the strange mound. Another report from the literature mentions a Bigfoot burial where large rocks were rolled on top of the grave.
Why mention it here? Peter Byrne once reported a mound on Alder Creek, near Sandy, OR. Another case was reported where Three Bigfoot were reported burying another along the river near Bagby Hot Springs, OR. In this case, a later investigation revealed that the river had erased all signs of the burial. All three cases are in roughly the same area, and the phenomenon might be a trait of Bigfoot. Anybody else run across anything like this, or have any theories of their own to mention?
* Evelyn Henricks called 8/17 and reports the finding of a place with her sister Gladys Walker (erroneously said Norma's sister in TR#37 report), who took area photos on 8/14/94, and aunt Norma Clark, north of Bentonville, AK, where strange holes had been dug, the dirt removed to make mounds nearby. The five holes she examined were 2-3 feet deep and 3-5 feet across, and no dirt was found next to the randomly scattered holes about 10-20 feet apart. The three mounds of different sizes were of loose soil, while the soil in the area is quite dry and compact. It was estimated that they were about a year old, based on last winters leaves being scattered on the surface and a small sapling tree growing from one of the mounds. What makes the area strange, is that one of the holes had four tracks visible in the soil leading up to the hole, and one stepping across. Evelyn called me asking about Bigfoot burial practices, but they did not excavate the mounds, just poking a stick in far enough to determine that there might be a hollow place underneath. Two dogs became quite excited, yapping and digging at the Bigfoot prints and even around the mound. They will tape measure the area and excavate the mounds and send in photos for another report.
Norma Clark, Bentonville, AR, writes about the area...we had went way back in the woods and found six holes in the ground, but only one pile of dirt. It looks like a grave, but was not very big...not big enough to account for the dirt removed from the holes. The dogs barked and hid in the house. Her big white dog never comes in the house, and he was so frightened, it was hard to get him out after he came in. Norma also mentioned (no date - assume recent) her neighbor, a mile and a half away, saw at 12:30 AM, a human-like figure cross the road. He said it was 6-7 feet tall.
FRIENDLY SASQUATCH TOTES INJURED TRAPPER
* Ray Wallace, June 30, 1994. This trapper, Bill (not real name) in Canada would trap fisher, marten, mink and beaver in November. He was a good friend of the Sasquatches, as the trapper would kill moose in the area where these Sasquatches lived, as he used to see their tracks. When the snow came he would shoot at least one moose a month and leave the carcass in an open swampy area where he could climb a tree about 2000 feet from the dead moose, and watch the whole Sasquatch family come and drag this moose away. Bill said one time he met this old male Sasquatch on the trail as he was eating hardtack, and he gave a hunk to "Old Sassy," as he called him. Bill said Old Sassy really liked that hard tack, and Sassy made it a point to meet him from time to time to get some of his hardtack. He said that Old Sassy would scream those high pitched blood curdling screams from time to time, and he would always answer him by firing one shot from his 30-.06 rifle. Bill said one time he met old Sassy on the trail, and Old Sassy gave him a big hunk of dried moose meat just like a piece of leather, as it was so hard that he had to take it to his cabin and cook it in order to eat it. Our moose hunting guides knew this old trapper real well, as Herb was our head guide, so he sent me a newspaper article that read , "Trapper With..." a broken leg from a fall somewhere on his trap line has been carried 45 miles to a house with a light on, by a Sasquatch. Sasquatch laid the trapper down on the front porch of the house, then he hit the front door so hard that he poked his giant sized hand right through the door, trying to attract the people in the house to take care of the trapper. I read the article that the trapper told the hospital attendants that he had fallen off a rocky cliff, and there was ice under the snow and he broke his leg. Bill said he was in great pain, and he woke up twice during the 45 mile trip, Old Sassy carrying him like a mother would carry her baby, with Sassy's right arm under his shoulders and his left arm underneath his legs below the hips. Bill said the odor of the stink from Old Sassy made him pass out every time he came-to. He said it really paid off being a friend to the old male Sasquatch, as he saved his life, for if he would have laid there all day and all night he would have frozen to death. The trapper said there was a lot of body heat from Old Sassy that kept him warm, as the temperature was 40 below zero that night when the family opened the door and discovered the man with a broken leg.
The red elder berries are ripe now, so that's a good place to see Bigfeet eating them. A man should climb a tree where he could see the elder berries and make a video of the whole family eating them.
* Jack Simmons said his step-brother, Sammy Brown, in 1969, was out of Maupin, OR, when walking in the woods he came upon a strange odor. His hair stood on end, at the wet-dog type of BO smell, not a rotting carcass smell. they turned back.
IDAHO BIGFOOT SCARES YOUNG GIRL
* Kathy Lang reports that 16 years ago, 7/76, while on vacation at Couer D' alene Lake in Idaho, she was confronted by a Bigfoot. She was with a bunch of kids playing in an abandoned camp with cabins and she was thrown in the lake while the other kids ran off. As she was headed back to her parents camp, two miles north of town, just beyond a small peninsula, she saw something kind of loping down the trail, apparently bent over or on all fours. She thought it was a bear and froze so not to attract its attention. Then it stood to full 7-8 foot height and looked at her. "It was huge, maybe 450#." I ran to my parents cabin nearby and got into the bunk and stayed there. It had glossy jet black hair, not long, "about bear length," but was so human-like that she at first thought it looked like a man in a monkey suit. The sun was shining on him and their was a blonde colored field of grass behind him and on the hill behind the abandoned cabins for contrast. The creatures head was sloping back to a point, the size was to big for it to be a man, and it was definitely not a bear, it was thick through the waist and had monstrous legs, the mouth was shut...lips not thin or thick, and the jaw was prominent, "huge, I thought it was gonna' eat me." The incident was about noon-1 PM, and it was 50-60 yards away. She was most impressed by the black leathery face with the almost flat nose, and was frozen for 30 seconds or so before she panicked and started running, "my heart stopped,". There was also a peculiar odor, like it needed a bath very badly. Later her father found her clogs, dug into the dirt and just laying there. There was an article in the Couer D' alene Times where 3-4 other people had seen the thing also.
MEDIA STUFF
* On 8/4 Ray Crowe was interviewed by WKRC radio in Chicago...they couldn't seem to get away from the topic of "droppings," which they figured Chicago was intensely interested in...wonder why? Also, on 8/4 at 7 PM, gave a talk to REI Sports Equipment "Outreach' group in Tigard, OR. The talk was on recent reports of Bigfoot activity. Several seemed very interested, and one person has called in a report. Sam Moses of "Outside Magazine" was at the shop 8/29 for a magazine interview. Dave Peden of Oregon Coast Magazine wants to do a wildlife article for next year and we will meet in Salem at Steve William's house, date not yet decided. The Raphael House Of Portland sent a thank you letter for a plaster track donated to their annual auction. Proceeds go to an Emergency Shelter for women.
* The Australian Broadcasting Corporation visited on 8/21 to visit. They're doing a documentary for Australian TV on Bigfoot and wanted to do an interview. We visited nearby Forest Park where footage was taken of the trees and trails while answering questions. They wanted to film a meeting, but none was scheduled, so we held a mock meeting. Calls went out to several members, and we gathered at 3 PM and had a meeting. Fred Bradshaw was the keynote speaker, telling of Bigfoot activity on the North River. Individuals were then interviewed; Gail Highpine on Canadian Bigfoot kidnappings; Henry Franzoni on his Skookum Lake incident, and Larry Lund on the Yacolt sighting. Kelly Taylor in Washington DC set up the session. Interview was by Michael Gleeson, camera by Rob Bondy, and sound was by Darren Costello. Mike said he'd send us a tape and we'll show it at one of the meetings.
* Paul Duchene, who recently wrote an excellent article about the WBS for "The Oregonian" newspaper, has recently suffered a very serious motorcycle accident, and is expected to spend a long time recovering from a pierced spleen. Best of luck Paul, and we hope to have you back in business soon.
MISCELLANY
RECORDS DONATED TO SOCIETY
* R.D. Winslow of the Oregon merchants Association has donated a large number of old 45 records to the society. Bigfoot Records, 1981, "The Legend Of Bigfoot," by Kim Olson. Thanks a lot Mr. Wilson. If anyone should want one of these collectable rarities, please send $5.00 donation + 1.00 shipping.
TRACK RECORD SUBSCRIPTIONS
* The Bigfoot Research Project is still sponsoring a few people for memberships to the WBS. If you know somebody that is short of cash, but wants to subscribe, or...a professional person that wouldn't join, but is open minded, and after receiving the Track Record for a year, might subscribe...please send in their name and address and a couple words about them. The idea is that after a year of the Track Record, they will continue on their own. Thank you, Ray.
ECO TOUR EXCURSIONS
* Rip Lyttle reports the tours are going well, his first trip taking a client into the Molalla River area. He did note that in TR#39, I had the phone number wrong; should be (503) 357-2952...had the prefix erroneously before as 397. When he called in to mention the error, Rip also mentioned he had a "friend-of-a friend" type report of a motorcycle rider near Arch Cape, Hy. 101, OR, had seen Bigfoot in the area twice while riding. No date or other confirmation.
ATTRACTING BIGFOOT WITH A CURIO LIGHT
* Jim Kuhn, of the Eugene WBS Branch, suggests the use of Cyalume lightsticks, hanging on trees as a Bigfoot attractant. The sticks, about $1.00 each, give off a firefly glow type of cold light for 11-12 hours. Lots of different colors are available, and the sticks can usually be found at sporting goods shops. Hang over dust or mud for tracks.
INDIAN CURSE PUT ON RANCH
* Downwhen, white men raped the Indian Chief's daughter, coming from a ranch adjacent to the Hoopa Indian Reservation, CA. The angry chief laid a curse on the land, "Sugar Bowl Ranch," out of Willow Creek. In the 1960's, because of the curse, it was hard to rent the land, and the acres were finally rented by an uncle and aunt of the informant. Aunt Grace was killed soon after in an auto accident where the car went off a bank on the ranch. Uncle Ira was a heavy equipment operator in the woods and often found Bigfoot tracks.
SKAMANIA ISLAND INDIAN LEGEND
* Rip Lyttle talked to some people on Skamania Island near Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River, that told him the legend of Wia-hut. The Umatilla Indian legend was of a woman in the 1900's whose husband and sons died of consumption (TB). She went to the island to live out her days, and she used to cut wood and leave it on the end of the island for stern-wheel ships that would pay her. Rip has found a lot of suspicious barefoot tracks on the island.
BIGFOOT HOUSE FOUND
* Floyd Rasmussen while tending bar talked to one of the tavern musicians living in the woods near Bagby Hot Springs, OR. While walking in the woods, no date given, he found a lean-to shelter of large logs against an old rotted stump. Asking his friend who might do such a thing in the woods, the reply was, "it's a Bigfoot house." Also he talked of rock piles in the remote area above Ripplebrook Ranger Station.
FOREST SERVICE BIGFOOT LOGS
* Cliff Olson talked to Robin W. a US Forest Service security officer, about a possible Bigfoot Logbook. He said there was no special book, but that the biologist usually keeps a personal log that has reports of all wildlife reported at the Estacada Ranger District headquarters.
BIGFOOT LEAVES ROCKS ON STUMPS
* Fred Bradshaw commented that he had seen small rocks left on stumps. He believes Bigfoot does it to mark trails with. I'll run some photos of rocks on stumps found last October .Once a deputy sheriff, Fred recalls a report on file from 1927 of two men from the Quinault area, WA, that were found dead, their rifles twisted and distorted, and with all their bones crushed and broken, like they had been repeatedly smashed against the ground. He'll try to obtain an official copy for the Track Record. Tried...they had been dumped.
MUSIC ORIENTED BIGFOOT
* Dan P., 1989, a Forest Service employee, saw a Bigfoot run across the road in his headlights at Music Creek, SE of Estacada, OR. It was a very big one, 7-8 feet, dark, and moving very fast down-slope. T5S R5E, FS road #45.
ANOTHER NEW BIGFOOT STUDY GROUP
* Henry B. May IV, has decided to start a Bigfoot interest group in Mississippi. He's calling it The Southeastern Sasquatch Association, and will be its director. Write him at PO Box 344, Boyle, MS 38730. He has had experiences in Georgia and MS...see the Letters To The Editor for more info on his local report. He's also writing a flyer for sale on the Hairy Giants Of Mississippi, a recap of new and old sightings. Write for more info. The first meeting was August 20th, and new members discussed Bigfoot physical attributes, dermal ridges, and watched the Patterson film. Meetings will be every Saturday 6-6:45 PM, and there will be field trips.
SAINT HELENS, OR, BIGFOOT REPORT
* Laurine Davis talked to her insurance man about Bigfoot, and he said he was reluctant to talk about the topic, because someone might think he was crazy. He said he was a hunter of over 20 years, and was on the outskirts of St. Helens, OR, several years ago, when he came upon tracks and heard terrible screaming noises.
ADDRESS CHANGE FOR BRG
The Bigfoot Research Group, Director Chris Julian, has an address chance. Contact at P.O. Box 1252, Sanford, ME 04073. See his card in this issue.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
POSSIBLE TOUTLE, WA, BIGFOOT REPORT
* Robert Avila, 8/1/94, Kalama, WA. Sunday, 7/31, took a trip to Toutle, WA. When arriving there, I drove down N.E. Toutle Road very slowly. About 5-6 miles down the road, I was in the car crawling down in an area at about 8-10 MPH, around 3-4 PM. I heard this grunting sound similar to a hog. I stopped to listen more, then suddenly I heard crashing sounds like something running. I saw nothing. This sound was probably 30-50 feet from the road, and the crashing went on for two minutes. Who knows? Perhaps it may have been a Bigfoot, but could have been an elk.
SOUTH CAROLINA BIGFOOT
* Sherry S., 6/28/94, Newberry, SC. Where I live in the country there are forests behind my property. One day last summer (1993) while hanging out some clothes, I had a strange feeling I was being watched. I looked towards the woods and saw a rustling in the bushes, and caught a glimpse of something I couldn't explain. It seemed the shape of a human, only larger, and when I looked it's way, it was gone very quickly. I've heard them three times late at night making sounds like something whirling or whistling, and buzzing noises too. (Credit this report to Bill Green, NEBFC)
Then a few weeks later I was dumping some old food at the edge of the garden. When I looked over at a gully where I had seen deer before, there was a definite outline of a head, arm, and shoulder. It stood very still for about five seconds, and then it was gone, causing the bushes to move when it left. It was over six feet, and it didn't have skin or clothes, but a light-brown fur.
I don't know if this means anything, but 6-7 years ago I had two rabbits in a pen at the edge of my property. One night when I went to check on them they seemed very scared. the next day when I was feeding them I noticed that the back of the wooden pen had somehow been damaged. There were long claw marks and what looked like something had tried to gnaw through the wood. My husband said it must have been dogs, but it didn't come back. There is an absence of squirrels, snakes and small creatures, and a lot of my cats have mysteriously disappeared over the years.
MISSISSIPPI BIGFOOT REPORTS
* Henry B. May IV, PO Box 344, Boyle, MS 38730. Follow-up to phone conversation in TR#39 (7/18/94-10 PM CDT), where pets were acting up. "...my sister said our cat was acting weird. Well, after we got off the phone with you, we went outside and investigated. I didn't see anything, but our neighbor's dogs were barking at something, then began whining. My sister said she caught a brief glimpse of a dome-shaped head and its owner running away from her. This was just about the time the dogs barked, so there was a Sasquatch around the area that night."
* Henry B. May IV, 8/11/94. The night after we got off the phone with you (7/19), we went outside to investigate at 10:30 PM. I didn't see anything, but our next-door neighbor's dogs were barking like mad. When I didn't find anything, I went back to where my sister was waiting for me. She said she saw a dome-shaped head running away from her, at which point the dogs started barking again. Just last Friday, Aug. 5th, my sister saw a creature twice in the same area. The first time she saw it was as it was crouching by a tree not to far from our house. The second time she saw it, it was crouching in a neighbor's garden. This was at 11:00 at night.
Just this past Monday, the 8th, my sister and I went to a wooded area about three miles from our house, and my sister said she saw one standing at the edge of the woods...then it disappeared, and five minutes later she saw a face peering out at her from the trees with a look of amazement on its face. I can just imagine what that looked like. I'll bet it was a comical look. Those are our most recent encounters, however, for the past month, off and on, my sister and I have heard mysterious noises from outside, such as groaning, moaning, roaring, whistling, grunting, and bellowing. These noises all took place at night. One night a month ago, we heard what sounded like two of the creatures communicating with each other, because one sound came from our south, and the other from the north, so there were two of them out there that night. One night a week ago, Sunday, July 31st, we heard the sound of running feet outside my sisters bedroom. then two days afterwards, Aug. 2nd, we heard the same sound again at night. These creatures come around our house more than anyone else's, not that we mind, but it's very unnerving to think that there is a 9-10 foot tall, large hairy creature standing outside my house at night.
ARKANSAS CREATURE SIGHTED
* Cammy McDaniel, Bella Vista, AR, 8/25/94. I was six miles NE of Bentonville, AR, on 8/21/94, at 1;10 AM. I had the TV turned up and the dogs in the neighborhood started barking. Then I heard this unexplainable sound that I've never heard in my entire life! (14 years old) It made the hair on my body stand straight up. I got my pellet gun and went outside on the backyard deck where it had gone dead quiet. Then it started up again from real close. I shot my pellet gun in the direction of the sound and it quit. Off the side of my deck I saw a big, hairy, thing standing beside a tree. It was at least eight feet tall. I guess it saw me looking at it because it made that sound and took off running really fast around the side of the house. When I saw it, it was about five feet away from where I was standing. I ran inside.
